More Than a Competition
Rubato was created to celebrate complete musicianship.

Unlike traditional piano competitions focused on a single discipline, Rubato brings together classical and jazz under one international stage. Competitors perform before world-class jurors, learn from leading artists, and become part of a growing community that values creativity as much as technical excellence.

Whether competing, attending, or supporting the arts, every person who joins Rubato becomes part of its continuing story.

Born in Argentina, Julio's remarkable musical journey began at the tender age of five, and by nine, he had already embarked on his professional career. His repertoire showcases an impressive range, including jazz, rock/pop, Latin, and Argentine music, earning him recognition as a prodigious young talent. At 16, Julio studied under the distinguished Argentine pianist Graciela Reca and later earned a degree in Classical Piano Performance from the Universidad Nacional del Litoral.

Upon completing his studies, Julio became a piano accompanist at the Choral Institute of Santa Fe School of Music and taught at the Isidro Maiztegui School of Music. His academic and professional journey continued as a full-time professor at UNL, where he taught Applied and Collaborative Piano, Popular Music, and Arranging. Julio also served as Director of School Extension & Outreach, greatly contributing to music education and radio/TV productions in Argentina. During this time, he performed as part of the Santa Fe Jazz Ensemble Big Band and the Picante Latin Jazz Group.

Julio's pursuit of excellence led him to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he was awarded the Herbie Hancock Celebrity Scholarship. At Berklee, he studied with renowned instructors such as Neil Olmstead, Russell Hoffmann, Kevin Harris, and Vladan Milenkovic, and received mentorship from industry legends like Susan Rogers (Prince), John Storyk (Jimi Hendrix), Sean Slade (Lou Reed, Radiohead), and David Bendeth (Paramore). He earned his Master’s in Arranging and Orchestration in 2016 and graduated Summa Cum Laude in Music Production in 2019.

Since relocating to the United States, Julio has captivated audiences as a solo artist and ensemble member, performing across the country. His professional expertise has been sought after by many esteemed institutions, including Jacksonville State University, University of North Texas, Texas Christian University, and the Omaha Conservatory of Music. He has also been invited to conduct webinars for the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy, reaching a global audience with his expertise in jazz, arranging, and Latin music.

In 2021, Julio was appointed Director of Music Education at the Oxford Performing Arts Center and became the Artist-in-Residence for the Atlanta Pops Orchestra. His contributions as an educator and performer continue to inspire a new generation of musicians.

In 2022, Julio founded the Rubato International Piano Competition, sponsored by Steinway & Sons, which quickly gained prominence as a premier piano competition in the southeastern U.S., offering an innovative platform that combines both classical and jazz music for young talents. Julio remains an active member of several prestigious organizations, including the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).
